The Symposium

The Biological Control Symposium (SICONBIOL) was created 26 years ago by the initiative of researchers from the Fundação Oswaldo Cruz - FIOCRUZ and the Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro – UFRRJ, it became a significant scientific event that happens every two years. Since its first edition in 1988 in Rio de Janeiro, the SICONBIOL was established as the most important discussion forum about the scientific knowledge advances concerning the biological control, and in the development and application of appropriate technologies for the management of insect’s populations, weeds and other pests that are interesting to agriculture and public health.

Sustainability

During 26 years the event occurred regularly every 2 years. The 13 event’s editions were held by groups of researchers from EMBRAPA (7), FIOCRUZ (3), USP (1), UFLA (1), the Instituto Biológico de São Paulo (1). Its stage is supported by the Sociedade Entomológica do Brasil (Entomological Society of Brazil), the Sociedade Brasileira de Microbiologia (Brazilian Society of Microbiology) and the Sociedade Brasileira de Fitossanidade (Brazilian Society of Plant Health). The financial support from CNPq, CAPES, EMBRAPA, FIOCRUZ, FAP's, the Ministry of Agriculture and other institutions, has been made the event possible.

Participants

Even though SICONBIOL’s audiance are mostly local, people from South American countries often attendants to SICONBIOL, especially because of its location, and several speakers from different countries from the five continents as well. The event brings together, every two years, 500 to 700 researchers and students of several universities from different regions of the country, research centers EMBRAPA, FIOCRUZ and other research institutions and production of biological control agents. The participation of technical specialists from public institutions (federal, state and municipal) of agricultural and health areas has been growing, as so the private sector related to biological agents control.
